Awards

Patrick has not put himself forward for awards but has occasionally been nominated by others.

That includes winning in the Sports Travel Journalism Category in The North American Travel Journalists Association (NATJA) awards for a feature for United Airlines’ in-flight magazine, Hemispheres.

Patrick’s Green Resorts Database published as part of the Ski Club of Great Britain’s ‘Respect the Mountain‘ environmental campaign by the Club in the early 2000s also won several awards.

More recently, Patrick’s DrySlopeNews site won the cyber award from the International Skiing History Association in 2020. The same body awarded Patrick its Ullr Award in 2023 for his book: Around The World in 50 Slopes.

Patrick has also repeatedly been recognised by his peers. Stephen Wood writing in The Independent as long ago as 1998, said, “Thorne is uniquely qualified to select the optimum resort for any skier.” Mary Frary listed Patrick as “one of 20 people to know in skiing” and, separately, as “one of 50 people to know in travel” in pieces in The Times. Writing in The Scotsman, Roger Cox described Patrick as, “The ski writer’s ski writer.”
